The date for your diary is Tuesday 28th August 2012.

Following the success of our book club night we’ve planned a film night.  Watch one or all of the following movies and we’ll chat (with popcorn) to see what everyone thought!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) is an American romantic science fiction film about an estranged couple who have each other erased from their memories, scripted by Charlie Kaufman and directed by the French director, Michel Gondry. The film explores the nature of memory and romantic love. Stars Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst and Elijah Wood.

Chariots of Fire (1981) is a British film starring Ben Cross, Ian Charleson and Nigel Havers. It tells the fact-based story of two athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice. The film was written by Colin Welland and directed by Hugh Hudson. We mark the 2012 Olympics by including this film in our choice!

Six Degrees of Separation refers to the idea that everyone is on average approximately six steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person on Earth, so that a chain of, "a friend of a friend" statements can be made, on average, to connect any two people in six steps or fewer. This 1993 American film starring Stockard Channing, Will Smith, Donald Sutherland and Ian McKellen is an adaptation of the John Guare play of the same title which was inspired by real-life con artist David Hampton.

Great Expectations (1946) is a British film based on the novel by Charles Dickens where we meet the wonderful characters of "Pip", Miss Havisham, Mr Jaggers, Magwitch and Estella.  It was directed by David Lean and stars Sir John Mills, Bernard Miles, Finlay Currie, Jean Simmons, Martita Hunt, Alec Guinness and Valerie Hobson.  We mark the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens by including this film in our choice!

Little Miss Sunshine (2006) is an American black comedy road film which was the directorial film debut of the husband-wife team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. The film stars Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano, Abigail Breslin, and Alan Arkin. Olive is ecstatic when she learns that she has qualified for the "Little Miss Sunshine" beauty contest that is being held in Redondo Beach, California. However, money is tight and due to various logistical issues, the only way to make the trip is if the entire household goes. Despite family members not wanting to go, they all band together to support Olive and embark upon the 800 mile road trip in their ancient yellow Volkswagen T2 Microbus.
