A group of us had a fantastic time today being shown round Tynemouth Lifeboat station at North Shields. There were 9 of us altogether as we were joined by three members of Newcastle East WI. Kevin from the RNLI gave us a fascinating tour round the station and told us all kinds of information in an entertaining way.

We learned lots of things about the operation of the lifeboat service. For instance, did you know:
  • The difference between a lifejacket and a bouyancy aid is that a lifejacket will automatically turn you onto your back (useful if you're unconscious in the water!)
  • The Severn class all weather lifeboat cost £2 million
  • Crew wear rubber dry-suits to protect them from hypothermia when they're in the water
  • The crew have rescued 113 people and 2 dogs so far this year!
We all really enjoyed the experience - thanks to Kevin for showing us round.
